Better post

Posted by Coyote3D on August 16, 2010

Seems it has been a week since I last posted.

That is really bad of me, so here is a post.

It is just I don’t really have anything new to post yet, so I haven’t.

I skipped a few days of school due to sore feet, and haven’t made any real progress.

I did a little more work on the previz of that first slide of my storyboard. I won’t post it this time, as its not much different than the one in my last post. All I have done is slowed down the timing a little, added a little colour, changed him, so he stands up, before he looks around, and also added a few squares in front of his eyes so I know when his eyes are to first open when we are looking at him. Ok, it sounds like more that I figured now I list the changes. Maybe I should have posted it, but I didn’t really consider how much I changed, so I didn’t make a copy of it onto this computer.

Since then I have been working on the next slide.

I figured this would have been an easy one. He just runs around a little bit so you can tell he is young and full of energy.

This just hasn’t been working for me. I have had him two far from the camera I believe, so you lose some of the energy, but when I have him closer to the camera I have two fast camera movements and it just doesn’t look right.

I think I will have to have him closer to the camera, and have more than one shot/sequence. I think the problem is that I am thinking one slide, one animation sequence, but that is clearly not going to be the case for this slide, and I suspect most of them.

I guess I have learned something after all, but all the same I didn’t even bother saving most of the sequences I made (yes, I was that unimpressed with them it wasn’t worth pressing save), so I have nothing to show you at present.

I’m figuring that tomorrow and Wednesday, I will try closer up, and make a few different sequences, rather than one. If that works better for me, I will try to stitch them together, and then I will actually have something interesting to post, rather than just my rambling.

Oh, I did make a draft model of a rock and a flower. But as I haven’t gotten to the scene where my preziv uses them, I never posted them either. They are really draft, not anything to look at at all really, so I don’t think I will post them, but if you look in a previz or two from now, odds are you may see them, as I believe scene three in my storyboard requires a flower, and I think could also do with some rocks.

The first stage of previz

Posted by Coyote3D on August 9, 2010

“It took me ages and I did next to nothing”, that’s the quote I used over lunch today. No I wasn’t talking about my life, I was talking about the morning I had spent working on my previz.

Now my storyboard has about 21 slides in it at present. I though I would start doing a quick previz on it this morning.

I had already watched a video on the basics of animation, so I figured I would be ready for the basic stuff I had planned.

I started, placed a few objects, set a few keys, moved a few objects, reset a few keys, did a quick preview, and I decided that my camera movement was two fast. I figured, “No problem, I’ll just move the keyframe”, and that is where my morning ground to a halt.

I quickly realized that I knew what I needed to do, but I couldn’t remember how the video told me to do it. No problem I figured, I’ll just quickly have a look at the video and remind myself.

Now I watched the video, I watched him do it, and it seemed pretty easy, but the problem was that he was doing it, but he wasn’t telling me what keys and mouse buttons he was using to do what he was doing on the screen. I knew what I needed to do in principal, but the video wasn’t giving me the technical knowledge.

Luckily I was able to ask a fellow classmate (thanks Richard), and he set me right.

After that, I went back to my scene I was working on, and spent the rest of the morning slowly moving frames around, trying to make my previz for my first slide look kind of like I would hope for a first attempt at a previz.

Well, I finally made something. Its just a camera coming up to Rex’s cave, Rex looking either direction and coming out. Rex’s body isn’t animated, just using him as a solid object with the entire thing moving.

Hopefully you can see what I did in the frame below (if it doesn’t show up, you may have to refresh your browser, if it still doesn’t show up, let me know, and i will look into it).

Its a previz, and its a start, so I guess I have made some progress today 🙂

Honey Bee

Posted by Coyote3D on August 6, 2010

Once again I put a few hours in, and this time I was working on a quick model for a small flying creature.

This creature is going to be eaten, then spat out by our main character, Rex.

I decided this morning to base it on a honey bee, so did a quick search on Google for a few pictures for reference, and then whipped up this model.

Once again it is a draft model, so I have all the creatures I need to start working on a previz soon.

Seemed to come out how I was hoping. I really have to admit that reference pictures really help, as I have no idea what this would have looked like if I had tried to model it out of my head.

It will look a bit better closer to final when it has some textures, the classic yellow/black stripes, and maybe even some hair if I decide to give it a close up shot in the animation.

Quick models

Posted by Coyote3D on August 2, 2010

Did a few hours today.

I am wanting to get some base models out, so I can do a little previz to give me an idea of how the project will unfold. So I need to make a few more of the models.

Today I made a quick Lizard, and a quick Predator.

Below is what I have;

Chicks under development

Posted by Coyote3D on July 31, 2010

Well, I have a few models I need to create for my little short, so I decided that I may as well put an hour or so into it this afternoon.

Well, I wasn’t as good as I was hoping, and didn’t quite make the one hour mark, hopefully I will be better next session.

Either way I thought I would start working on the base model of the little chicks which are defending their nest and fighting Rex.

Below is what I have made sofar;

(wip) Chick

(wip) Chick

The properties I am trying to achieve with this model are;
– large beak to use for a range of expression
– noticeable eyebrows, also for expression
– torso to have classic frozen chicken shape, but not to noticeable

When the model is finished, it will probably have a light covering of fur, and some bald (probably pinkish) spots.

At present it has arm ‘polls’ sticking out of the torso, as I need to decide a little latter what the arms/wings are going to look like, so I just put them in there for a place holder, and to give me some polys to work on when I decide what I want them to look like.

While it isn’t fantastic, I am starting to be able to get from my mind onto the computer the basic model shape a little quicker now. I guess practice really does help 🙂

Plant Eater under development

Posted by Coyote3D on July 27, 2010

I haven’t done too much since my last post.

A friend from Oz has been visiting, so that has been slightly distracting.

I have done a little more on my plant eater though, and I remembered to bring a copy to this computer this time.

As you can tell, it is a lot better shape than last time I posted a draft, as I have picked up a few tricks since that attempt.

Project approved, development of story board started

Posted by Coyote3D on July 21, 2010

Hi, a few things have happened since my last update;
1: My Paragraph/Proposal has been approved, so I am now officially working on it,
2: I have started working on my story board,
3: I have done some more work on the large Plant eater, and it is looking a lot better.

I can’t show you the work on the plant eater right now as it is on a different system. Maybe tonight or tomorrow.

I have already posted my proposed proposal, the only difference now is that it is my official proposal for a story, rather than my proposed proposal.

As for the storyboard, I have started working on it. It is currently 21 pages/slides I believe. I started doing it with the tablet, drawing some ideas, and then writing the notes in on the same page using the tablet, but once I finished the first draft, I realised that my writing with the tablet is really hard to read, and also often I wanted to put in more notes, but didn’t, not because I didn’t have more to say, but I couldn’t fit them in how I was writing them, so I decided to throw them all into Open Office Impress, with each slide having the drawn image on the top, and the bottom of the page having typed notes.

This is a much better system, as I can write better notes, and it will be much easier to update the notes as time goes on and the storyboard gets more development on it.

I never erased the original hand written notes on the images, though it is on my to-do list.

In case you are interest in how the storyboard stands currently, you can ready download and view it below. It is just a PDF file, so just about every body out on the Internet these days should be able to read it once they’ve downloaded it.

Storyboard for Rex project, as of 21/July

Hope you understand it, as I said, pay more attention to the notes under each image, rather than the notes on the images, they should be the same, but expended, and easier to read 🙂

Working on a Plant Eater

Posted by Coyote3D on July 12, 2010

Well, I’m on the last week of my holiday, but I decided that maybe I should start getting back into modelling. I have just started this a few minutes ago, but since I rendered a quick shot to see what it was going like, I thought I may as well post it here just to confirm that I am still alive.

I am working on making some sort of Plant eating dinosaur for my project. This is really at a very early stage, but even now it is probably enough for you to determine the basic shape I am kind of aiming for.

Very early stage of creating a Plant Eater for my animation

Very early draft of plant eater

Hopefully it will look a lot better afer some more work 🙂

Attaching skin to Rex

Posted by Coyote3D on July 8, 2010

Ok, its been a while since I posted anything. I’ve been busy with work and moving. I have just made a quick render of the last thing I have been working on.

I have been trying to work out how bones, and then skin, and skin weights work. I have given Rex some simple bones, and I have then done some tests using his back left leg.

In this simple animation, he moves his hip, then his knee, then his ankle. They seem to stay attached to his body, and deform how I want them to after I spend a while getting their weights right.

Next he looks up and down, using his neck joint.

Doesn’t look like much, but I’m quite happy with it, as I am now starting to see how bones and skin work.

Paragraph approved (in theory)

Posted by Coyote3D on July 1, 2010

Just a quick note.

I’m sure you are all dying to know, and yes, my paragraph has been approved in theory.

The proposal can’t be accepted until my tutorials I have been doing have been marked off. So the begining of next term we will be marked and the tutor will check that we understand the principals in the tutorials, and after that we can start our projects.

At that stage our Paragraphs will be ‘officially’ reviewed, and a week after that they will be set in stone and we won’t be able to change them, as we will be marked based on if we completed the goals we listed.

He has said that at this stage he believes he will accept the paragraph, but until it is official, it is still just a proposed proposal 🙂

As for my tasks now, the next on my things on my list are…
1: Learn some of the basic animating
2: Create a storyboard
3: forgot what it is, but I have it written down in my work book.

Cheers all.
